The Seniors’ Winter League final took place on the day after the magnificent win at the Augusta Masters by Danny Willett.

The sad and poignant errors by Jordan Spieth on holes 10 and 11, with a hideous 12th that threw away his five-shot lead over the eventual winner were almost replicated by David Fox and John Elliott.

They led by four holes with only six to play, but Stuart Green and Martin Hale staged a great finish with classy golf, maybe not quite up to Danny Willett standards, reported John Elliott.

The lead was cut to only one hole as they all stood on the 18th tee.

The fairy tale comeback was thwarted as David and John just managed to halve the 18th with a tense five-foot putt and win the trophy by a whisker.

The ladies played for the Haggart Trophy on Saturday and coming out on top was Jo Shorrocks (2) who scored 37 points.

Coming second was Amanda Burchell (6) with 30 points. Two ladies scored 29 points each, Christine Price (27) and Dot Kenneth (22), with Christine coming third on countback, edging Dot into fourth place.

Jane Wain, the organiser of the Devon League team, was pleased to announce that her team had notched up another home win, this time against Great Torrington, with four matches won and three lost.

The team now looks forward to their away matches.
