Saltstone Caring hosted a half marathon fund raising walk, bringing 18 participants together including MP Sarah Wollaston.

Nearly £700 has been raised so far through sponsorship for the Autumn Glory Half Marathon Charity Walk which took place in October.

David Spencer, an octogenarian from Kingsbridge and Saltstone Caring supporter decided to join the challenge at the very last minute.

Saltstone Caring is a registered charity whose aim is to promote the independence, physical and mental well-being of older, isolated or vulnerable people living in Kingsbridge, Salcombe or the surrounding area.

The planned route was from Bovey Tracey to Lustleigh where three walkers dropped out, lured in by a lunch in the sunshine. The other participants continued through extremely steep woods to the Tottiford and Trenchford Reservoirs where two other walkers sadly had to call it a day due to work commitments.

The final thirteen completed the challenge including David Spencer, finishing at Bovey Tracey via Shaptor Rock and Woodlands.

Event facilitator and Saltstone Caring Trustee, Sandy Gilbert said: “This was a most gratifying event to organise.”

“It successfully raised not only much needed money, but the profile of the charity. It was a very good get together for existing Saltstone volunteers and supporters, however the challenge attracted new participants.”

“I am happy to report that many of these have now become much needed volunteers. Well done everybody for giving of your time, and our grateful thanks go out to all those that donated money so very generously.”
