The Amateur Swimming Association National Swimming Championships 2015 took place in Sheffield from August 4-9.

Having achieved national qualifying times four swimmers from Kingsbridge travelled to Ponds Forge International Sports Centre to battle it out with competitors from 270 other swimming clubs from across the UK.

Becky Noyce swims for Kingsbridge Kingfishers and qualified in the 15 yrs women’s 50m butterfly. She came 15th with a time of 31.14 seconds, which was just off her personal best time.

Laker Wong qualified for the men’s 50m breaststroke and again he was just off his personal best time with a swim of 30.87 seconds.

His swim was just five hundredths of a second behind the 10th-placed swimmer, which meant he just missed out on a place in the final and came 11th overall.

Laker has trained with Kingfishers since the age of 10; now aged 19, he has spent two years training at Mount Kelly College in Tavistock and for the past year has been away at university.

Despite having limited training opportunities during his first year at Swansea University, he swam a solid heat, and he still comes back regularly to train at Kingsbridge whenever he is at home.

Louis Gautier was part of the men’s relay team for Mount Kelly College, who qualified for the British Summer Championships.

They swam in the 100m freestyle relay and the 200m freestyle, swimming strong personal bests in both events. They went into the final of the 200m in fifth place and maintained that with a five-second improvement over their heats swim, setting a big new Mount Kelly record.

Louis also swam with Kingsbridge Kingfishers Swimming Club between the ages of 10 and 16 and has trained for the past two years at Mount Kelly.

Emily Laurence qualified for the women’s 50m breaststroke with Kingsbridge Kingfishers. She went into her first heat seeded 16th with a time of 35.55 and swam a personal best time of 35.30 seconds to achieve a place in the final, where she was seeded 10th.

After another fantastic swim of 34.19 seconds, she finished in sixth place overall in the 16/17 years category. She was the third-fastest 16-year-old in the final.

Kingsbridge Kingfishers (KKSC) is a very competitive swimming club and they hold training sessions at Quayside Leisure Centre seven days a week.

For a small swimming club in a small Devon town, they compete at a high level, and swim in the Arena League. They provide an amazing service to the aquatic athletes in the South Hams.

Becky, Laker, Louis and Emily would like to say thank you to all coaches, swimmers and parents at KKSC for their overwhelming support, and to everyone at KKSC who works so hard to run the club and provide such a great training atmosphere.
