The highlight of January is always the captain’s drive-in on New Year’s Day, but sadly the weather had other ideas this year writes Liz Line.

About a hundred members gathered to welcome in the new year but although the sun shone, the course was closed due to waterlogged conditions and so the competition couldn’t go ahead.

However the new captains, followed by a crowd of members, went to the first tee to carry out the drive in .

Heather Spencer, the new ladies’ captain, went first and hit a good drive down the middle of the first fairway.

Club captain Harry Cattell then stepped up, followed by Finn Whelan, the juniors captain, and Chris Holmes, standing in for the seniors captain Tom Burnett, with their pressure-laden drives.

The members had all bought squares to guess the place where the captains’ balls finished.

The money raised went to the two captains’ charities, the Hope Cove Lifeboat and a cancer research for children organisation called William’s Fund.

Darrell Day and Judith Lungmuss guessed the correct square and will be parking in the captains’ spaces for the month of January as their prizes.
