Bigbury Golf Club

It’s a great time for three of the club’s teenagers, junior captain Luke Westlake, Adam Keates and Jes­sica Leach, who have all been selected for county squad training and representative play writes Rosemary Sharps.

Sixteen-year-old Luke, who studies at Kingsbridge Commu­nity College, playing off a six handicap, and 17-year-old Ivybridge Community College student Adam who plays off five, recently attended the U18s squad training day, where course management and yoga formed part of the session.

Adam and Luke also played in the Devon and Cornwall U18 friendly match at Saun­ton Sands, where a team of 12 from each county enjoyed a stableford match, which ended in a draw.

Thirteen-year-old Jessica, who has been involved at Bigbury since she was six years old, was invited to join Devon Girls Golf and has been included in Devon County Coach­ing programme.

As the first Bigbury ladies’ friendly match at Wrangaton ap­proaches, it seems an appropriate time to recap the 2015 games, reported organiser Marlene Johnson.

Some 35 ladies were involved in the six friendly matches played in 2015; a seventh scheduled match was unfortunately cancelled.

There were three games played at home and three played away. For the first time, 10 Bigbury ladies crossed the Tamar Bridge into Cornwall to play at China Fleet. A very warm reception was received at China Fleet and the Bigbury ladies are looking forward to welcoming China Fleet this year.

All the matches were played in good spirits and the weather for all the games was kind.

Let’s hope the 2016 weather is equally as good.

Club professional Tracy Loveys’ playing season kicks off on Monday when she is playing in the WPGA AGM foursomes, paired with Claire Waite.

They will be playing at The Berkshire and hoping to go one better than last year, when they came second at the event. All at the club wish them the best of luck.
