Tony Roper, of South Brent, writes:

The news that our MP, Dr Sarah Wollaston, having changed her mind, has decided to vote to Remain in the EU came as a shock and disappointment.

At an open meeting in South Brent on Friday, March 18, her audience was pleased when she made it crystal clear that the EU does not have a democratic government nor any link with us her constituents and that therefore she intends to vote to come out.

Those present welcomed her confirmation of the news you published in February.

Pondering her predicament, I concluded that her U-turn stems from the appalling behaviour of all the political parties. They have by their party political squabbling denigrated a national referendum intended to discern the wishes of the electorate on the single point whether to stay in or come out of the EU.

This referendum is exceptionally important to the nation both now and for very many years to come. This is not a subject to be trivialised nor is it decent to persuade by fear of what the future may or may not hold.

When the fear is based on opinions held by professional speculators such as international bankers and economists whose record so far this century is pretty poor, it seems to pile bias upon folly.

The honorable course would be the provision of facts and advice to count our blessings.

In this sceptred isle we have accumulated many blessings, among which is a democratic government – not perhaps a good system but the best available and certainly not available or bettered by Brussels. Another blessing is our rule of law of innocent unless proved guilty and there are many more.

I’m sure Dr Wollaston will agree that facts must be correct or they are not facts. To be believed it is best they’re sensibly presented and not traipsed around the country on the side of a damn silly battlebus.

Nevertheless such stupidity cannot soil the virtue of the cause or its merit.

Dear doctor, your diagnosis was mistaken. Heal thyself and please turn again.
