Plympton Victoria 0,

Kingsbridge A XV 40

On an extremely soggy and blustery afternoon the II’s travelled to Devon Two side Plympton Victoria.

Due to a lack of a man or two in key positions for both sides, the game was started with uncontested scrums. This could have put a downer on the afternoon, but both teams started what was going to be a cracking contest in ever-worsening conditions.

After the first 10 minutes of either side jostling for the upper hand, it was sustained forward domination that began to tell for Kings.

After a series of pressure in the home 22 the Kings pack made their way to the line, with Mervyn Down coming away with the spoils for the first try of the game, unconverted.

The rest of the half was played mainly in the league side’s half with some strong carries from Sean Woodland and Freddie Buckle.

Vic cleared their lines, the return finding its way to David Stephens, who rolled back the years to show several flailing defenders a clean pair of heels to race over from halfway, Adam Morgan with the extras for 12-0 at half time.

The second half started as the first ended with town in the driving seat.

A foray for the home side into the Kingsbridge 22 saw a turnover and Luke Williamson cleared for the visitors. A superb chase from James Ogglesby and some neat footwork to hack the ball on saw him score under the posts, Morgan again converting.

Town started to play with a swagger and with passes flowing freely, Buckle broke down the left to feed Stephen Hamilton in support for the next try, Morgan again slotting a tricky two-pointer.

Kings welcomed back Gareth Hack in the number 10 jersey and his quality hasn’t left him.

Williamson, playing his third position of the afternoon, chipped a beauty over the advancing defence; collecting his own kick, he fed a pass out to Olly Harmer, who rounded the last defenders to slide in. Morgan once more added a difficult conversion.

The final score was deservedly finished off by Morgan after several passes and a break along the left touch line, Morgan converting for an emphatic 40-0 victory. An outstanding performance from numbers one to 20 in very trying conditions.

This Saturday sees Kingsbridge A XV entertain Tiverton IIs at High House at 2.30pm.
