Salcombe Tennis Club finished another successful competitive season when the club tournament finals were completed.

But prior to that the summer season’s highlight was the Salcombe ladies team winning the South Hams Summer Tennis League Ladies title for the third year in a row.

Overall 12 ladies played for the team in the 12 matches, but the core of the side was Jennie Sprague (captain), Fenella Goldsworthy, Sarah Allen, Caroline Evans and Janice Croke.

This year the club’s mixed team struggled with injuries and availability problems and finished at the bottom of division one, so face relegation to division two.

However, the club hopes to bounce back soon with more regular pairings and resume playing in the top flight. Twelve players represented the mixed team and most regular were Stuart Ward, Roger Brownill, Fenella Goldsworthy, Julia Cater and Diddie Sims.

The club runs a flourishing box league for those wishing to play doubles and a ladder for singles players.

This year the tournament finalists were those who finished top of their respective competitions and the upshot was that Fenella Goldsworthy won the ladies’ singles title, Stuart Ward the men’s singles, Diddie Sims and Julia Cater took the ladies’ doubles with Stuart Harrison and son Harrison Ward winning the men’s doubles.

In the mixed doubles club chairman Caroline Evans and husband Simon were the victors.

Social tennis continues at Salcombe all year round with arranged fours and eights catering for men’s, ladies and mixed of all standards. The winter box leagues will be arranged shortly and new members of any standard would be sure of a warm welcome.
