Our captains had a glorious day for their “Drive In” which was held on Saturday writes Rosemary Sharps.

The sun shone and we had a welcome break in the gloomy dark days, which has so far been a feature of 2018.

Our president, Peter Lawrence, opened the day with a short speech after which our captains, men’s captain Liam Kimber, ladies’ captain Marlene Johnson, seniors’ captain William Barons and juniors’ captain Jessica Leach, all made their speeches of introductions.

Marlene explained that the captains’ charity would be the Devon Blood Bikes; the representatives from the charity were present with an ambulance and one of their high-powered bikes and they in turn explained their duties and how the organisation was funded .

Then it was off to the first tee for the nerve-wracking drive off for the four captains.

Four very impressive drives were executed and our assistant professional Adam Keates bravely positioned himself on the fairway to take the measurements of the four balls’ distances.

Back to the clubhouse where we were allocated our tees for an 11-hole, four ball better ball stableford competition. The weather, as forecast, remained sunny but extremely cold and there were some extremely good scores recorded.

Winning the competition was Ty Sherborne and his partner Wayne Jenkins, with Matt Smallridge and Jake Pepperell a close second.

A round up of last month’s men’s competition results showed Thomas Williams won the three clubs and a putter competition, with Joe Bastone second and Jed Spedding third.

A three-ball team event on December 17 was won by Adam Burgess, Liam Kimber and Jake Pepperell with a combined score of 81 points. Eddie and Steve Inch with Darren Mutton recorded a close 80 points for second place while Terry Alderton, Tony Messenger and Keith Naylor came third.

The last trophy competition of 2017, the Stewards Cup, was won by Diggory Vowles (8) scoring 39 points. Matt Smallridge (12) came in second with 38 points while Steve Ryder (8) took third place when he recorded 37 points. Martyn Scarterfield and Diggory Vowles claimed the Lawson Cup awarded for winning the Men’s Winter Knockout after a final which was played out against Dave Moulding and his partner Steve Ryder.

Congratulations go to all the winners and contestants from 2017 and we wish Liam, Marlene, William and Jessica all the best for 2018.
