Playing in the annual competition against our friends and neighbours from Thurlestone for the infamous Avon Lantern trophy, our team were able to retain the unusual lantern for another year with their winning score of 5½-21/2 writes Rosemary Sharps.
It was a very close match, much tighter than is suggested by the overall score, with three matches being won on the 18th, reported captain Denis Killen.
He also stated that he and his playing partner, our professional Tracy Loveys, had enjoyed a very tight match against Thurlestone’s captain Alistair Proctor and his partner, professional Jack Wallace.
As always, an excellent match which was played in good spirits, followed by a great meal and plenty of banter in the clubhouse after.
The ladies’ competitions are well underway and the winner of the EG 1 medal competition and division one on April 2 was Anne Browse with a fine net 71, two shots clear of second-placed Jane Rickman with net 73.
Maggie Best, who scored net 74, came third in division one. Faye Pannell, (coming second overall) was the winner of division two with net 73, on count back from Jane Kingsnorth with Pam Goode coming third. As a result Anne has seen her handicap come down to 18.
Jane Wain was the winner of the ladies’ midweek stableford when she scored 27 points edging Jackie green into second place on count back and Pam Goode once again featured, coming third with 26 points.
EG 2 medal played on Saturday saw Linda Austin the overall winner with net 73 with Jan Dimmock coming second with net 76 on count back from Irene Lowry. Irene topped Division 1 with Caroline Hallett coming second with net 77 from Anne Browse who came third with net 79.
Division two was won by Margaret Taylor, scoring net 81, on countback from second-placed Pam Goode, with Irene Newton coming third with 82 points. Division 3 was topped by Linda Austin with Jan Dimmock coming second and Margaret Balkwill was third with net 78
The juniors’ squad had a good start to the season registering two wins over the holiday break. Having defeated Wrangaton 4:1in the West Devon Junior League last Monday, they followed this with a win Dartmouth, where the score was 3:2. Captained by Ben Sly the rest of the team members were Luke Westlake, Adam Keates, Philip Taylor, Jessica Leach and Adam Taylor.
Recording a great score of 42 points Martyn Scarterfield was the overall winner of the Sunday April Stableford and topped Division 1 with Mick Gates coming second overall with 38 points and Richard Medlin came third with 37 points. Mike Edwards with 36 points came first in Division 2, Paul Gritton came second with 35 points and Thomas Williams was third with 34 points.
Played in tough conditions last Wednesday’s stableford was played with the chance to compete in the Lombard PGA Pro Am Qualifier. Simon Bagshaw came top of the overall competition with 37 points and also Division 2. Alan Maher came top of Division 1 with 36 points winning on count back from second placed Mick Gates and Dave moulding was third when he scored 31 points. Coming second in Division 2 was John Steel with 35 points and Gordon Harper came third with 33 points. Alan will now partner our professional Nigel Blenkarne to the competition at Burnham and Berrow in June.
