Week 10 saw a break from league action in the Totnes and District Snooker League as the handicap cup competitions progressed.
In the individual competition the tie of the round was undoubtedly between the two highest handicapped players remaining in the tournament. Chris Edmonds of Regal played host to Steve Cairns of Woodlands - both men playing off a handicap of -19.
In a tight match it was Edmonds who ran out a 2-1 winner and he must surely now be considered favourite to win the tournament and add to his division one title that he won last season.
Joining Chris in the quarter finals will be his teammate John Wood who is yet to lose a frame so far after wins over Chris Reeve and Mike Buckpitt.
There were wins also for Nick Freeman (Dartmouth), Colin Drury (Woodlands) and Barrie Taylor (Halwell G) who will all be hoping for a good draw and a chance to get into the semi finals.
In the doubles competition the pre-tournament favourites Howard Mattacott and Derwyn Morris of Ivybridge A overcame last year’s runners up Ben Trant and Jamie Palmer of Totnes by a score of 2-0, despite giving up a 20 point handicap.
The Ivybridge duo’s main competition could come in the form of Edmonds and Wood of Regal, who are through to the final eight courtesy of a bye.
Also making into the final stages were Phil Harris and Noel Edmonds (Dartmouth), Colin Drury and Steve Cairns (Woodlands) and Wes Abercrombie and Howard Finch (Totnes).
Next week’s division one fixtures see Ivybridge A v Halwell H, Regal v Dartmouth, Totnes v Halwell B and Woodlands v Ivybridge B. In division two, matches are Halwell C v Halwell G, Mill C v Mill B and Halwell K v Mill A.
