South Hams District Council have launched a public consultation on proposed changes to the maximum Hackney Carriage (taxi) fares that can be charged within the district.

The proposed amendments aim to ensure that fares remain fair and reasonable for both passengers and drivers, taking into account increases in operating costs and wider economic conditions.

The proposed fare changes would apply to journeys in licensed Hackney Carriages, not Private Hire.

A Hackney Carriage is identified by an illuminated roof sign and a council-issued vehicle licence plate, with the driver also required to display their South Hams Council licence badge.

Only a Hackney Carriage can be pre-booked and ply for hire on the streets or on council-nominated ranks.

The consultation closes on Thursday, October 22 and is available through the South Hams District Council website.
