The search for a missing Dartington man continued through the weekend, with lifeboat crews, coastguard teams, aircraft and police battling challenging conditions as Storm Austen swept across the South West.
Andrew Hill, 43, known as Andy, was last seen walking along the seafront at Goodrington, Paignton, at around 12.30pm on Friday, October 23.
A major multi-agency search was launched that evening after concerns he may have entered the water.
Despite hours of searching in increasingly difficult conditions, Andy has not been found.
Torbay RNLI’s all-weather and inshore lifeboats joined Exmouth RNLI, a coastguard helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft, police and coastguard rescue teams in the operation.
The initial search lasted nine hours, with Torbay’s all-weather lifeboat at sea for more than eight hours.
Crews searched the shoreline and carried out multiple parallel-track searches across the bay, working alongside other rescue services.
However, strong westerly winds, ranging from Force 5 to Force 8, driving rain and increasingly turbulent seas made the operation particularly challenging, hampering visibility and the ability to spot anyone in or near the water.
The search extended towards Hope’s Nose and the Mussel Farm, as well as further offshore, before the main operation was stood down in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Torbay RNLI returned to the water later that day after Solent Coastguard requested a further daylight search around Roundham, near Paignton.
The crew launched at 12.10pm and searched the area, including sending two crew members ashore to examine the rocks.
Despite the continued efforts, nothing was found and the lifeboat returned to station shortly before 3pm.
Andy is from Dartington and also has links to Totnes, Paignton and Newton Abbot.
Police said he had spent the previous night at a hotel in Dartmouth before travelling to Goodrington.
He is described as white, around 6ft tall, of medium build, with a moustache and medium-brown hair, shaved at the sides and longer on top.
When last seen, he was wearing a cream shirt with a tropical-style patterned print, grey shorts and no shoes.
His wife, Sarah, has appealed to people in the area to help with the search.
“We’re desperately worried,” she said. “Please encourage anyone to search outbuildings and sheds in the Paignton or Goodrington areas. If anyone knows where he is, please reassure him that his family love him and just want him home.”
Anyone who has a sighting of Andy or information about his whereabouts is asked to call 999, quoting police log number 244 of October 23, 2026.
