Salcombe will hold its first ever Lantern Parade this year, inviting families, community groups and businesses to light up the town and celebrate the start of the festive season.
Organised by Salcombe Town Council, the free event will take place from 4 pm to 6 pm on Saturday, November 28, with participants carrying handmade illuminated lanterns through the town accompanied by music.
The parade will begin at the Young Salcombe Centre before travelling down Island Street and along Fore Street, finishing at Cliff House.
There will also be refreshments, music and prizes for some of the best lanterns at Cliff House after the parade.
Mayor of Salcombe Jasper Evans said: “I’m delighted that Salcombe is holding its first ever Lantern Parade. It’s a wonderful opportunity to bring our community together, celebrate the start of the festive season and see our town in a magical new light.
“I hope families, residents, local groups and businesses will join in, get creative at the free lantern-making workshops and make this a truly special occasion for Salcombe. I look forward to seeing you there!”
Two free lantern-making workshops will be held at Cliff House on Sunday, November 15, and Saturday, November 21, both from 10 am to 5 pm.
Organisers say the drop-in sessions require no booking, with all materials provided to make traditional willow and tissue-paper lanterns illuminated by LED lights, adding that experienced crafters will be on hand to help.
The workshops are suitable for all ages, although children under 16 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.
Around 30 local businesses are also expected to take part, offering visitors complimentary sweets or drinks, discounts and other seasonal treats, following discussions through the Salcombe Information Centre.
Free parking will be available throughout the day in South Hams District Council car parks, with organisers hoping Bonfire Hill car park will also be available.
If the parade is well supported, the council hopes to make it an annual event.
