The Salcombe Players are busy rehearsing for their March production of the bittersweet comedy Day of Reckoning.
The play, directed by Yvonne Basey and written by Pam Valentine, tell the story of a summer fete committee meeting on a cold January night in a rundown village hall in rural England.
Christine Bonner, secretary of the Salcombe Players explained: ‘As committee protocol gives way to bickering and gossip, we begin to see the personalities of those present emerge. Thus, the tip of the iceberg is presented.
‘Six months later the hall becomes the command centre for the fete. Much has happened during this time and the day of the fete, with everyone feeling the heat, does indeed become the day of reckoning.
‘As with all well-planned events, everything seems to go wrong – the bouncy castle starts to deflate, the floats get stuck and the wrong prizes are taken for the children’s bran-tub dip. Against this background, the comedy becomes subtly blacker as dark secrets are revealed. The upbeat ending affirms the enduring value of village life.’
‘If you have ever seen a committee in action you cannot fail to enjoy Pam Valentine’s comedy of life in a village,’ Christine added.
Day of Reckoning runs from Thursday, March 16 until Saturday, March 18, at 7.30pm at Cliff House, Salcombe.
There is a licensed bar available. Seating is conventional on Thursday night and with bistro-style tables on Friday and Saturday.
Tickets and seating plans are available from Salcombe Tourist Information Centre.
