OVERBECK’S in Salcombe will be exhibiting entries to the International Garden Photographer of the Year.
The National Trust property will be hosting a display of the judge’s favourite entries to the competition throughout the years since its inception in 2007.
Overbeck’s will be exhibiting over 20 photographs from Tuesday, March 1, until Tuesday, May 31, on the themes of ‘beauty of plants’, ‘wildlife in the garden’ and ‘beautiful gardens’.
The competition was started by a group of professional garden photographers and quickly grew to become the world’s premier showcase of garden and plant photography.
‘We are very excited to be hosting an International Garden Photographer of the Year exhibition at Overbeck’s next spring.’ said Lucinda Heron, operations manager at Overbeck’s.
‘The photographs are stunning and will provide an inspiring connection between our garden and the artist’s view of the beauty of gardens, plants and wildlife. We will also be running our own photography competition alongside the exhibition for those inspired by Overbeck’s.’
In partnership with the event there will be a special evening Talk and Tour entitled ‘Better Plant and Garden Photography’ by Phillip Smith, Founder of the International Garden Photographer of the Year.
Philip is a trained photographer who regularly has work published in gardening magazines, books and newspapers. He said: ‘Garden photography is an emerging genre. Using a garden as an outdoor studio all photographers of any age and at any skill level can develop their artistic life.
‘Garden photography encompasses many aspects of other types of image-making - you can create mini-landscapes, stalk and photograph all kinds of wildlife - or you can make your flowers look like Hollywood starlets.’
The Exhibition Talk and Tour ‘Better Plant and Garden Photography’ will be held on Saturday, May 7, between 5.30-6.30pm, and the garden will stay open till 7.30pm if the weather allows.
Overbeck’s Garden Photographer of the Year competition runs from 13 February to 31 July. There are two themes – ‘the beauty of plants’ and ‘the secret life of a garden’ – and will be divided into three age categories: Under 10s, 8-16 and 16 and above.
The winners will all be framed and mounted for display at the end of the year. For more entry details please visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/overbecks.
