RNLI lifeguards at Sedgewell Cove rescued at kitesurfer on Sunday afternoon as he was being pushed towards the rocks by the wind.

Lifeguards on patrol at Bantham on Sunday, June 21, spotted the kitesurfer moving arou-nd the headland.

They radioed the lifeguards on patrol at Sedgewell Cove to see if they could spot the kitesurfer.

Then they noticed that the kite had ditched in the water below the cliffs between Bantham and Thurlestone.

Conditions included an onshore wind and two-foot surf, which meant the casualty, a man in his 40s, was being taken by the conditions into the rocky shoreline.

Senior lifeguards Chris Rampling and Dave Pascoe launched their inshore rescue boat and proceeded to search for the casualty.

The lifeguards located the man in the water and helped him into the inshore rescue boat, before recovering his equipment.

He was returned safely to the shoreline at Bantham beach, from where he had set off.

The lifeguards at Bantham met Chris and Dave on the shoreline and assessed the casualty for any possible injuries, before also offering some safety advice.

Fortunately he requ-ired no medical treatment.

Paul Gunning, RNLI lifeguard supervisor for the area, said: 'Kitesurfing is a very popular sport on the beaches within Bigbury Bay.

'As with all water sports out on the coast, we recommend that people speak to the lifeguards on duty, and seek advice about conditions on the day before entering the water.'
