The Royal British Legion are launching their Poppy Appeal in a unique fashion this year with a specially planned day.

On Saturday, October 28, there will be a special service to launch the appeal at St. Edmunds Church in Kingsbridge from 2.30 to 4.30pm.

Alongside the service conducted by Rev. Jackie Taylor, the Totnes Brass Band and the South Hams Singers will be performing in aid of the poppy appeal.

The day has been planned as a special celebration for the Poppy Appeal with a more easily accessible location for all residents.

Alongside this the RBL Kingsbridge and District Branch ran a ‘7’ Primary Schools picture competition where the children could enter a picture in remembrance of the poppy appeal.

A spokesman for the RBL explained how he hoped this would help the children understand the importance of Remembrance Day and the Flanders poppy.

Prizes for the competition will be awarded at the service after all the pictures were judged by Kingsbridge Town Mayor Mr Chris Povey and the Chair of Kingsbridge and South Hams Art Club Mr. Bill Buckyby.

Schools had the choice to enter individual pictures or one from a whole class effort. The winner of the Best Overall Picture category was Ruby-Pearl Baldwin from Thurlestone All Saints Church of England Primary School.

For the five to six year age group and the seven to nine year age group, Loddiswell Primary School as a class effort succeeded in both categories.

Lastly, Milly Hooper was the individual winner of the 10 to 11 year age group who was also from Thurlestone All Saints Church of England Primary School.

The pictures will be displayed in St. Edmunds Church throughout the fortnight of the Poppy Appeal.

The schools who were involved in the competition includes: Kingsbridge Primary School, West Alvington Church of England Primary School, Stokenham Area Primary School, Charleton Church of England Primary School, Thurlestone All Saints Church of England Primary School, Loddiswell Primary School and East Allington Primary School.
