Michael Johnstone, of Embankment Road, Kingsbridge, writes:
A small crowd was blocking the road in front of the town hall not many miles from here.
A van approached. The driver refused to switch off the engine. A bugle sounded. The Last Post was very well played.
A silence and a short ceremony followed. The road cleared.
The large Union Jack was flying upside down on the town hall. I approached the mayor, in his gold chain, and politely told him.
‘What Union Jack?’ was all he said.
A lady on his behalf said brightly: ‘Oh, that will be the caretaker.’
A small point, you may think. But this is the flag of the country they fought for.
I thought it was a shame on their day.
