SUNDAY saw flooding across the South Hams with two people being reduced from flood water near Kellaton Cross.

The A379 between Plymouth and Modbury was badly hit, with standing water and rivers of water running down the sides of the road.

A fire engine from Kingsbridge and one from Salcombe with the Specialist Rescue Team from Camels Head, Plymouth, were called to a flood between Kellaton Cross and Coles Cross near East Allington.

Fire crews donned dry suits and made their way to the vehicle and led the two people in the car safely back to dry land without injury. The road was closed.

A BMW also had to be towed out of floodwater on Kittaford Cross on the way to the A38 from Loddiswell and diversions were put in place.

Robert Jeffery from Kingsbridge contacted us through our Facebook page to send photos and video of his journey back from Otter Nurseries on Sunday.

He said: ‘The roads flooded with blocked drains and the runoffs from clogged fields. Where were the council or South West Highways or maintenance teams? You expect it from country lanes, not the main road there.

‘Priorities are misplaced, they need to stand up to the Government and tell them need to have the budget enhanced for the Westcountry, not towns and cities which don’t have our requirements.’

Kingsbridge Police posted advice from the RAC about driving in heavy rain and flooding, including making sure you have a phone with you in case of emergencies and using a low gear and high revs when driving through standing water.
