Thurlestone Primary School pupils have put together their own newspaper, called the Thurlestone Beachcomber.

The paper includes movie reviews, jokes, stories and much more, all written by the pupils and including efforts from every year group from Reception to Year 6, with the older pupils helping the younger ones with their articles.

Piers Mahn, Year 6, was one of the editors-in-chief. He said: “I wrote about my football club, KM United, getting into the final out of 200 teams in Devon, with help from Milo Clover and Jamie Grant, both also in Year 6.

Talking about his Editor role, Piers said: “When the paper was finished, we looked at it and Lydia and I noticed a couple of things to change and edited it.” He said it was “very cool” to see it printed.

Lydia Watson, Year 5, was the other editor-in-chief. She said: “We checked through and changed any mistakes and checked the spelling. It looks really good and I’m quite proud of it as a newspaper.”

Isla Murray, Year 5, came up with the name of the paper. She said she came up with the name with her parents, drawing inspiration from The Beachcomber in Hope Cove, and then linked it to Thurlestone by calling it the Thurlestone Beachcomber.

She said: “Its really cool seeing it all put together, People have shown me things they’ve done for it before, and seeing it all together is great. “My favourite bit of making it was the brainstorming sessions and hearing all the ideas, and my favourite bit of the paper is the Playground section. It has news, sport, arts, features, a Parents’ Corner, but the Playground is the fun bit.”

The newspaper is being sold for £1, raising money for the Thurlestone Primary PTFA, known as the Friends of Thurlestone School.
