Salcombe Primary School are turning over a new page this year with the new Head Teacher planning to revamp and reshape the school.

On Thursday, November 10, Salcombe opened its classroom doors for prospective students and their parents to decide whether Salcombe was the right choice for them.

Andy Pugsley, the Head Teacher explained to the parents how the school is changing and growing and the role the school has within the federation.

The prospective children for 2018 and their parents were shown around by the current head boy, Max and head girl, Sophie.

“I let the children do this instead of myself so they could give the parents a real feel for the school and some very honest answers”, said Mr Pugsley.

“I think people need to know that the school has a strong ethos and a stable foundation to make the school an outstanding provision for the local community.”

One aspect of Mr Pugsley’s new ideas for the school includes the creation of new skills characters for the teachers to use in the classroom.

The teachers picked three skills that they think the children should focus on, specifically before they head off to secondary school. The three chosen skills were determination, team work and independence.

To engage with the children, the school ran a competition for the children to design a character for each of the three skills. The winners were Nina in Hazel Class (Year 3) who designed Densil the Determination Dolphin, Max in Oak Class (Year 6) who invented Tara the Teamwork Octopus and Cerys in Oak Class who created Hermin the Independent Hermit Crab.

Andy then got a graphic illustrator, Jade Broadhead to make the children’s designs into proper illustrated characters to used in the classroom.

The designs will be given out to the winners on Friday, November 17, in a Celebration assembly with signed finished copies of their creations.
