More than 150 children from local primary schools recently joined the National Trust South Devon rangers at East Soar Outdoor Experience for a week of activities.

Students from Loddiswell, Stokenham, Kingsbridge and Malborough primary schools visited the farm at East Soar to help the trust with conservation work in a fun and safe way.

Volunteer ranger Rachel Lewis said: ‘Allowing the children to explore the outdoors and get closer to nature is wonderful. Teaching them about the practical conservation we undertake, and giving them the opportunity to get involved is a great experience for the rangers and the children.’

The day started with scrub cutting and learning how to use different hand tools. They were then able to clear areas and have a fire. After lunch the students explored the farm, doing a scavenger hunt and enjoying some campfire cooking.

Imogen, from Loddiswell Primary School said after her visit: ‘At East Soar farm we enjoyed getting wet, playing in the puddles, roasting marshmallows and shrub cutting.’

Ranger Emma Reece added: ‘We really enjoy our week and it’s important to teach the children about the management of the fantastic coastline on their doorstep. It was also wonderful to see them using tools, and getting stuck into the practical work with such enthusiasm.’
