Pat Maylin, of Speakers Road, Ivybridge, writes: Over the past few years an antisocial craze has developed in Ivybridge. When the pupils have finished their GCSE exams it has become the habit for certain of the pupils of Ivybridge Community College to take all their coursework and either dump it or set fire to it in the countryside. The year before last several bags worth of paperwork bearing the school name was dumped on the moor near the disused reservoir on the Butterbrook. Some of it had been burnt and the fire was left burning, with the whole area littered with schoolbooks and papers. Last year it was Longtimber Woods that was chosen for the ceremonial dumping of a huge amount of papers, schoolbooks and school clothing, all bearing the school name. This year there have been more incidents. A party was held in the disused quarry just inside the Stowford Moor gate: the area was left littered with rubbish, cans, bottles, human waste and toilet paper. When the culprits were spoken to regarding their behaviour, we were ignored. Their fire was left burning and the moor gate was left open, allowing animals to stray. The track leading back to Harford Lane was littered with their drinks cans and bottles. Just a week ago, the Two Moors track from Harford Lane to Stowford Moor gate was the scene for another dumping of schoolwork, a lot bearing the school and teachers' names. It was noticeable that on paperwork that had originally borne the owners' names, these names had been torn off. There was a fire left burning in the disused quarry and among the burning schoolwork was an ICC jumper, several ties and a sweatshirt. Another 'camp' was set up over this past weekend at the ford over the Addicombe Brook on Stowford Moor: again this was left a complete mess, with human waste and toilet paper left blowing in the wind, and again schoolwork had been burnt on a fire. Why do these people do it? Do they live like this at home? What will the school do about it? Who do these pupils think is going to clean up after them? They should be ashamed of themselves.
