Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess is claiming the Saturday night headline slot at this year’s Sea Change Festival in Totnes.

Burgess led Britpop band The Charlatans through the 1990s and has since forged a successful solo career.

He is also a best-selling author and host of listening parties throughout lockdown, and will play the Saturday night headline slot at the Civic Hall with songs from his esteemed solo releases.

Also newly confirmed for Sea Change, which is returning from May 27 to 29 following a two-year Covid hiatus is Ethiopian jazz maestro Hailu Mergia.

The multi-instrumentalist and founding member and keyboardist of the funk group Walias Band will play at St Mary’s Church.

Veteran Congolese eco-punks Fulu Miziki, known for elaborate handmade instruments and stage costumes, have also been added to the line-up, along with James Leesley and Naima Bock.

Already confirmed are Friday night headliners, the Mercury-nominated Porridge Radio, Chilly Gonzales and Gwenno, who has just announced her forthcoming Tresor album.

They join Scottish Album of the Year award-winning singer-songwriter Kathryn Joseph; Bristol’s enigmatic country/pop song crafter Katy J Pearson and Emmy Award-winning soundtrack composer and pianist Michael Price.

Also returning to Sea Change are South Devon’s Pale Blue Eyes, whose most recent release TV Flicker made the BBC 6 Radio playlist.

The festival also features writers, films at the Totnes Cinema and DJ sets.

Venues for Sea Change events include Totnes’ Grade I-listed St Mary’s Church, the Bull Inn, the Barrel House Ballroom, the 17th-century Birdwood House, the exquisitely-restored Totnes Cinema and the award-winning Drift Record Shop among others.
