A FORMER Kingsbridge student is going head-to-head with internationally acclaimed winning actresses Nicole Kidman and Kristin Scott-Thomas for a theatrical award.

Rebecca Crookshank’s one-woman play Whiskey Tango Foxtrot has been nominated in three categories in the Broadway World Awards, after making an appearance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Her the nominations are for Best New Play, Best New Production, Best Leading Actress in a New Play.?The play’s director, Jessica Beck, is also nominated for Best Director of a New Play.

Rebecca is up against Oscar winner Nicole Kidman and Bafta award winner Kristen Scott-Thomas in the Best Leading Actress in a New Play.

Rebecca was born in Plymouth and grew up in Kingsbridge. She is currently living in London. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is an autobiographical comedy drama about her four years spent as an airwoman in the Royal Air Force, from the age of 16.

The show, directed by Jessica Beck and produced by Oliver Taheri Productions, explores identity, aspiration and the darker sides of being a woman in an institution and celebrates friendships that are made within the armed forces.

In 1997, after leaving Kingsbridge Community College, Rebecca went to the Plymouth Armed Forces recruitment office and joined the RAF. In 2007, after graduating with a first class honours degree in acting from the Italia Conti Theatre School, Rebecca set up a creative workshop company in the South Hams.

Her work reached out to over 500 young people in the community every week. The company, The South Hams Arts Collective, then went on to become Shacademy Ltd.

‘I worked with fantastic partners from the local schools, The Theatre Royal Plymouth, the Barbican and I was inspired by artists and creative practitioners in the south west,’ said Rebecca.

‘I am so proud my roots and I now run a creative consultancy company alongside my work as a writer-performer. I continue to mentor some of the students from the South Hams online over Skype every week. They are integral to my work and development as an artist.

‘My story celebrates following your aspirations which is a reoccurring theme in my work.’

She has written the show and performs it alone, playing nine characters.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot received five-star reviews at the fringe and the production team are currently finalising the tour for spring 2016.

‘I am very excited about bringing the show “home” to Plymouth next year’ said Rebecca.

‘While performing every day at the fringe, we collected donations for the Royal British Legion Women’s Section, of which I am an active member,’ Rebecca added. ‘We raised £461 and I have been invited to the Royal Albert Hall Remembrance Service as a guest.

‘On November 4, I am off to Manchester where I am a judge for the annual Nationwide Resettlement Awards. Connecting to military communities and sharing stories is important to me.’
