A biker was left with serious injuries after colliding with an old railway bridge on Friday evening.

Police were called to Stentiford Hill, Kingsbridge, at around 8.30pm where they found a motorcyclist had crashed and was found 15ft under the bridge.

He was taken to hospital and has since undergone surgery. He suffered open fractures to his leg and a smashed knee cap, but is said to be "on the mend".

Kingsbridge Police said on Facebook: "First Aid was administered at the scene but it was obvious that the male had serious injuries. Also, his location was very difficult to access as it was down a steep muddy bank.

"Ambulance crews attended from Kingsbridge and Dartmouth, Fire crews from Kingsbridge, Totnes and Salcombe, as well as an Ambulance HART Team and Rope Access Team from DSFRS (Camels Head).

"The male was eventually stabilized and conveyed via land ambulance to Kingsbridge Rugby Club where a Coastguard helicopter transported him to Derriford Major trauma centre.

"If anybody witnessed the incident or can help with the investigation then please call 101 quoting Log 0831.

"Our sincere thanks to all members of the emergency services who worked together tremendously well in very difficult circumstances. Also, thanks to the neighbours who kindly donated chocolate flapjacks and offered tea."

The road remained closed while accident investigators were on scene and reopened around 3am.
