Members of the public stepped up to give CPR to a man in Kingsbridge who had collapsed, while an ambulance took half an hour to arrive.
A large crowd of people surrounded the public toilets in Kingsbridge town centre this morning after a man collapsed.A member of the public who was one of the first on scene, said she called for a defib, and although she didn't know where the closest was, someone else did and ran to collect it from the pharmacy. She said of the people helping "the teamwork was fantastic" and singled out Samantha Dennis from the Kingsbridge Information Centre who looked after a couple of children while their parents helped perform CPR and look after the collapsed man.The AED was used, between sessions of CPR, but the ambulance took around half an hour to arrive. Another member of the public said: "The general public involved this morning were calm, professional, organised, knowledgeable and worked fantastically as a team, including his nephew who was with him. "He had the very best attention the general public could give in the circumstances. Kingsbridge should be proud."First responders and an ambulance attended the scene. Kingsbridge police officers later controlled traffic around the Quay toilets as emergency services worked to save the man’s life.
The Devon Air Ambulance attempted to land on the town square at the Quay, but it was deemed unsafe and it landed instead at the Recreation Ground.
Despite massive efforts, the man did not survive.More to follow.
