A CAR crashed on the Thurlestone road on Saturday and burst into flames, blocking the road and completely destroying the vehicle.
The crew from Kingsbridge Fire Station were called to the fire on the early hours of Saturday morning and when they arrived they realised it was a crash site. The driver was nowhere to be found.
The car was on its roof and was well alight by the time the fire crews arrived. A spokesman for Kingsbridge Fire Station said: ‘The aluminium construction of the vehicle did not help with extinguishing the fire which involved the entire vehicle. The destruction was very comprehensive.’
The fire brigade revisited the car, thought to be an Audi Estate sport; at around midday on Saturday after attempts to move the wreckage exposed hot spots.
A local farmer gave assistance with a farm vehicle, helping move the smouldering remains around so the fire brigade could extinguish the whole area with a hose. The wreckage was then removed and the road was reopened.
Police are still looking into the whereabouts of the driver. If you have any information, contact them on 101.
