THURLESTONE ladies travelled to Stover Golf Club for their captain’s away day on Thursday, September 17.

The weather was good and they played in threes with captain Heather Spencer organising the competition with some surprises for each group.

Following the golf was a cream tea and the prize giving, Liz Stewart, Diane Baker and Sarah Loader prevailing ahead of Nikki Smith, Janet Richardson and Fiona Turner.

Meanwhile the men had a good 3.5-2.5 team win over Yelverton but this wasn’t enough to overturn the deficit from the away leg.

Ian Linkins and Marc Greatorex were defeated late on, Derek Harwood and Owen Rees followed with a draw and then the next three were all wins. Going out last and on his own, Jim Stewart shot an excellent 73, going down 3&2.

Back to the ladies and they played a fun 9-hole competition of four clubs and a putter.

In good weather, VC Sue Esplin led the way with 23 points, ahead of Sally Nelson-Roberts (21pts) and Gill Markham (20pts).

Shona Wilson achieved the solitary birdie two, doing so on hole three.

On Saturday, September 19, there was a junior 9-hole stableford comp for Thurlestone, Boringdon, Torquay and Churston juniors.

Thurlestone’s Lola Sullock starred with 24 points, followed by Boringdon’s Maya Spring on 22 and then Joseph McGraw, from Torquay, with 15 points.

Lastly, to Sunday’s 3-man stableford team event for the men, with two scores to count.

Of the 48 competitions, David Eva, David Doyle and Steve Inch were the best, notching 89 points.

Their closest challengers were Philip Martin, Chris Widger and Matt Barlow, who were two behind on 87. Dean Lowden, Garth Gregory and Will Hoskin completed the podium with 84 points. There were 21 birdie twos carded so congratulations to them all.
