AT THE start of September, there were 33 entries into the ladies’ closed meeting with nine trophies up for grabs.

Sarah Loader won the Marshall Salver, Wendy Stewart the Marshall Trophy, Sally Cahill the Montgomery Rose Bowl and Nikki Smith the Bronze Bowl.

Also, the MacKenzie Vets Rose Bowl went to Sue Ansley, the Pearl Rowland Trophy to Victoria Gibbens, the Venerable Vets Trophy (scratch) to Maggie Best, the Venerable Vets Trophy (nett) to Tricia Swindell and the Cooper Putter to Maggie Best.

Sticking with the ladies and they travelled to Holsworthy for the semi-finals of the President’s Trophy.

Facing a strong Teignmouth team and giving plenty of shots, Thurlestone were defeated 4-2.

Despite defeat, reaching the final-four stage two years in a row is an accomplishment in and of itself.

In the team were Anna McGrath, Sarah Loader, Liz Stewart, Elizabeth Sharman, captain Pam Adams, Maggie Best and Heather Spencer (pictured with caddies).

Meanwhile, their Devon League team faced Dawlish Warren in tricky conditions. Thurlestone were victorious in five of the six matches, perhaps showing how used to windy conditions they are.

Martin Mendelssohn won the men’s midweek stableford with 39 points, ahead of Mike Day and Dave Wright, both of whom had 37. Dave Eva, Martin Oakes Monger and Chris Oldershaw notched birdie twos.

Back to the ladies and the Tregelles Trophy was on the line, awarded to those with a handicap between 24.5 and 40.4.

Tess Brownill prevailed on the day in the stableford with 38 points, narrowly ahead of Jan Brooking (36pts) and Jane Walker (35pts).

It was Helen Baker who lifted the trophy though, scoring 32 points.

Lastly, Bruce Booker grasped the Thurlestone Hotel Cup with a superb score of 45 points, finishing in front of Gary Jones (41pts) and Alistair Whalley (40pts), with seven birdie twos being recorded.
