A great win for Matt Smallridge when, having played two rounds of golf in atrocious conditions, he topped the leader board with a net aggregate score of 148 +8 for the day writes Rosemary Sharps.

This put him one shot ahead of second placed Darren Mutton (5), who recorded an aggregate total of net 149; third place went to Jeremy Andrews (23) when he came in with net 154.

A good weekend for Matt, whose success in the Nettlefold Cup followed on from his aunt, Caroline Hallett, who had won the ladies’ Bigbury Bowl competition the day before.

April saw Matt Barlow winning the Men’s President’s Trophy with an excellent score of net 62, pushing an unlucky Jeremy Andrews (65) into second place, commented professional Nigel Blenkarne.

He added that he was not the only person who thought 65 on a far from easy day would be good enough to scoop the prize.

John Woods also had a great score with 66, as did two of our low handicappers James Mitchell and Dave Graddon with 67 each.

Impressive golf from the field saw nine players beat their handicaps and achieve reductions, an encouraging start to the season.

Last Sunday’s stableford a close-run competition between the first three players, John Cocks, Nick Bunch and Matt Smallridge, when they all recorded 38 points.

The winner was John Cocks (18) on count back, which put Nick Bunch (11) into second place and Nettlefold Cup winner Matt (16) into third place.

All three had their handicaps reduced by one, as did Dave Moulding (11), who came home in fourth place.
