Bigbury Golf Club

What a week it has been once again. Two days when one actually thought that spring was just around the corner, and then it’s a return to biting cold rain, winds and fog. Not to mention the snow on Sunday. All very pretty, but not good for golf – or the golf course.

At times is it difficult to believe we are more than halfway through March – let’s hope we have a glorious spring and summer to make up for such a long winter.

An integrated stableford competition was held on Saturday, March 10, and some very hardy folk took part.

Along with the biting cold, the heavens opened, and some drowned rats later reappeared at the 19th hole. The competition commenced, was temporarily stopped due to fog, then restarted to get the winners.

In first place was Keith Naylor (12) with 37 points; second was Steve Ryder (7) with 36 points; and third was captain Liam Kimber (10), with 35 points. Two twos were recorded: Andrew Ware on the third and Chris Wilcox on the 10th.

The ladies’ result saw Melanie Adcock (19) in first place on 35 points; Vanda Irish (21) with 26 points in second place; and Linda Hanbury (19) with 25 points in third place.

Well done all the competitors, who managed to keep going for the 18 holes in absolutely awful weather.

The ladies’ friendly competitions have started this year, and captain Margaret Taylor will be pleased with the results so far: a win over Stover at home on Monday, March 12, and a draw with Yelverton at home on Friday, March 16.

The Mixed Babbage Competition winners have received their trophies in respect of 2017. Assistant pro Adam Keats, along with the lady captain of 2017 Sally Errett take on mixed couples in a matchplay competition. The winners are the opponents who beat the pro and lady captain by the biggest margin.

Jane Rickman and Dave Moulding did just that – and by quite some margin. Fortunately, Adam and Sally only recorded the one defeat, trouncing though it was.
