Devon Senior Cup

Plymouth Parkway reserves 4

(after extra time)

Salcombe went into this match with some trepidation considering Parkway play at a higher level and have won all their league matches so far.

Once the game was under way, however, this was forgotten and Town had most of the early play, with Charlie Barnes and Ashley Yeoman combining for an early chance which should have given them the lead.

The Parkway attack was having little joy against a resolute defence with Luke Milton and Willie Giffen winning everything in the middle.

With few chances of any note for either team the first half ended goalless.

Salcombe took the lead just after half time when Ollie Stallard lost his marker at a corner and hooked in at the near post.

Parkway then applied pressure on the Town defence which remained steadfast until the hour mark, when a foul in the area resulted in a penalty which was thumped past goalkeeper Nick Bonnet.

There were opportunities for both sides to win the match, the best of which fell to Town’s Barnes, who was foiled when the Parkway ‘keeper pulled off an excellent save.

With the score 1-1 at full time, extra time was needed to separate the sides.

Parkway were looking the stronger now and took the lead for the first time from a corner and followed up with a third goal to seal the tie. With Town pushing forward to try and save the game, they conceded again to end any chance of a comeback.

Despite losing Salcombe can be very proud of their performance, taking a very strong and well organised team to extra time.

Every player gave 100 per cent and if this can be carried forward another excellent season is possible
