TOM Cleverley has been handed a double boost as Plymouth Argyle continue to reshape their squad with the signings of midfielder Tyreeq Bakinson and forward Oliver Irow.

Bakinson has returned to Home Park for a second spell, joining the Pilgrims on a season-long loan from Leyton Orient, while 20-year-old Irow has arrived from Tottenham Hotspur also on loan.

The two arrivals give Cleverley further options in midfield and attack as he builds a squad capable of competing in League One.

Bakinson, 27, is a familiar face to Argyle supporters, having previously spent time at the club during the 2019/20 promotion campaign under Ryan Lowe.

The midfielder made 14 appearances during that spell, scoring twice, before the season was curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, Bakinson has gone on to build considerable experience across the EFL.

After leaving Bristol City, he joined Sheffield Wednesday in 2022 and was part of the Owls side which won promotion from League One, finishing behind champions Argyle.

He subsequently had a loan spell with Charlton Athletic before moving to Wycombe Wanderers in 2024.

Last summer he joined Leyton Orient, making 43 appearances for the London club during the previous campaign.

Cleverley believes Bakinson's all-round qualities will make him an important addition to his midfield.

“Tyreeq can do a bit of everything in the midfield,” said the Argyle head coach. “He is tall, physical, reads the game well and is clean on the ball. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Director of football Derek Adams said the club had moved quickly to bring Bakinson in following Brendan Wiredu’s departure.

“It’s pleasing that we have been able to act quickly after Brendan Wiredu leaving the football club,” said Adams. “Tyreeq has a lot of experience at this level, has been a League One promotion winner, and at 27 is a good age for a midfielder.”

Irow, meanwhile, adds further attacking versatility to Cleverley’s options.

The England youth international can operate on either flank or through the middle and has extensive experience with Tottenham’s Under-21 side.

He also has previous experience of playing at Home Park, having appeared for Spurs in the Vertu Trophy last season, when he scored a late consolation goal.

Irow spent the second half of the 2025/26 campaign with Mansfield Town, making 18 appearances and scoring four goals.

Cleverley believes Irow’s direct style and versatility will provide another dimension to his attack.

“I’m very pleased Oli is joining us,” he said. “He is a young winger who likes to be direct. He can play off the left, or the right, and down the middle as well, so he is versatile and gives us options. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Adams believes Argyle can help Irow take another step forward in his development.

“Oliver had a productive spell at Mansfield last season, and comes to us for a second loan, in which we think we can develop his game even further,” he said.

The double signing follows the departure of Wiredu, who has left Argyle to join Sky Bet League Two side Salford City in an undisclosed transfer.

Wiredu joined the Pilgrims in June 2025 after three seasons with Fleetwood Town. He made 43 appearances for Argyle, including 26 starts, and scored four goals during his time at Home Park.
