The third week of August was a very busy one on the grass tennis courts at Thurlestone Golf Club.
The highly popular Kit Marshall Family Cup was eventually played on Wednesday after bad weather on Monday. However, spirits were not dampened and a huge crowd watched the families battling it out over the round-robin matches and then semi-finals and finals. Pairs must be related in some way, of a different generation and juniors must be 14 years and under.
The emerging winners from the group games to play in the semi-finals were: father and son James and Sidney Bampfield v Immie Bewes and her aunt Sarah Phillips; father and son James and Joshua Kleiner Mann v Hannah Bewes and her aunt Becca Nash.
The Bampfields and Becca and Hannah came through to the final, where James and Sidney (who live in Belgium) swept through to a convincing win to take the cup.
Part of this event is to award special prizes and this year these went to Edward Nash as the most improved player and Immie Bewes, who has played every year since the competition started and now, at age 14, was in her last year!
Tournament organiser Janet Richardson thanked Kit and Gillian Marshall for their continued support of this enjoyable event.
On Thursday during the same week the ‘Richardson Cup’ was duly completed, but with so many children participating it once again had to be divided into two age groups. Both winners came through five round-robin matches followed by semi-finals and finals.
In the 13-18 age group, by chance three out of the four semi-finalists featured brother and sister partnerships: Giles and Isobel Barron beat Bruno and Stella Dimitroff; Immie and Olly Walker beat Thibo Wellems and Immie Bewes.
In the final the Barrons were back to their winning ways with a win over the Walkers in an entertaining final.
In the semi-final of the 10-13 age group the unlucky semi-finalists were Amelia Pillar and Josh Kleiner Mann and Charlie Threshie and Sasha Kleiner Mann.
The final was close with Joseph Kleiner Mann and Millie Robertson outplaying Hector Moorhead and Hannah Bewes by four games to two.
Gary Herbert, Olympic gold medallist and commentator, who gave the trophy was on hand to make the presentation to all the winners and runners-up.
