A busy couple of weeks on the course, where the weather has tried to cause havoc with the golf schedules, largely unsuccessfully due to the players who turn out in all weathers to play writes Rosemary Sharps.

Congratulations go to Margaret Balkwill on winning the Rabbit Trophy. With the challenge of her sister, Jenny, scoring a hole-in-one a few weeks ago, Margaret recorded a score of 35 points to win the trophy and put her name on the honours’ board.

In the ladies’ Border Reiver Trophy, a team aggregate stableford Jackie Green, scoring a great 39 points, helped her team mates Anne Petty-Brown and Anne Fowler take pole position with 102 points.

They won on countback from second-placed team Irene Lowry, Pip Fisher and Karen Graddon. But coming away with a big smile on her face and a large purse, Maggie Best scooped the pot from the twos on a week of a quadruple rollover.

The final was played out this week in the ladies’ Goodall summer knockout and congratulations go to the winning pair Cathy Harrington and Jane Kingsnorth, who knocked out worthy opponents Jan Lucas and Anne Fowler, well done all.

Accumulating 139 points from four best scores out of 12 stableford competitions meant that Julie Leach won the Bigbury county stableford competition, with Dot Kenneth and Irene Lowry four points behind with 135 points each.

The men played for the Prater Prize the following Sunday and some great scores were returned.

Coming top was Matt Barlow (24), scoring 86 gross, net 62, to edge out Matt Smallridge (19) on countback when he shot net 62.

Robert Scott (22) followed with a net 64, and J Gilbert (16) posted 66 net. Dave Rickman (11) and Brian Greep (21) both carded net 67, all these gentlemen saw their handicaps tumble as a result, while Paul Kingwell’s (2) 73 gross score was the lowest gross score of the day.

Peter Cooper returned with a great 41 points in the midweek stableford to win the competition and come top of division one.

Dave Barker (12) and Martyn Scarterfield (5) both came in with 39 points. Division two was won by Bob Davies (21) scoring 37 points, with Bob White (16), Del Miller (17), David Thorne (16), Paul Jeffrey (17), Kevin Rowe (26) and Carl Firminger (22) all coming in on handicap with 36.

Bob’s good streak continued when he scooped the top seniors’ prize and scored two twos.

The Friday Circus continues to be popular and this week had some high scoring.

Leading the way with a great 41 points saw Mike Warren scoop the prize golf balls from Peter Gripaios and Kevin Rowe, who scored 39 points.

Bigbury hosted a mixed team from Teignmouth on Sunday playing in a greensomes format.

The weather was glorious, just like a summer’s day should be, and our organiser Alan best was delighted when his team took the match eight games to two.
