THE National Trust are looking for volunteers to spend the day coppicing in Tor Woods near Overbeck’s in Salcombe.

Coppicing is a traditional countryside craft of cutting hazel stands back to the base, allowing them to regrow to create timber for fuel, making hurdles or bean poles for example.

It is also an important part of woodland management, as it lets more light into areas of the woodland for the benefit of different plants and insects.

The volunteer day is on Tuesday, February 16 from 10am to 3pm, although timings are flexible for those interested in a shorter day.

If you’re interested, contact National Trust ranger Emma Reece on 01548 562344. Booking is essential as spaces are limited, children over ten years old are also welcome. All tools, gloves and equipment will be provided and no previous experience is necessary.
