Totnes guitarist, singer-songwriter and local luthier Jimmy Pinch is returning to the stage for a hometown show at The Barrelhouse Ballroom this September.

The full-band performance will preview his new roots-rock album, Symptoms Of A Lean Condition, a collection shaped by slide guitar, sharp storytelling and a lifetime spent in the world of guitars.

Many locals will know Jimmy as the man behind Castle Guitars and Pinchy’s Guitar Garage. This much-loved Totnes workshop has spent the past two decades repairing, restoring and upcycling instruments for players across the South West and beyond.

But Jimmy’s career began long before the workshop.

At 16, he lied about his age to secure gigs on the notoriously tough Northern working men's club circuit. Two years later, he moved to London and ‘bluffed’ his way into the animation industry, eventually spending seven years working his way up, including a stint on Steven Spielberg's animated film Balto.

At 26, he left the movie industry to pursue music full-time, touring with 90s indie favourites Saint Etienne before eventually moving to Totnes to raise his daughter.

"I'm such a guitar geek that a guitar shop grew around me," said Jimmy. "I needed to be there for my daughter, but I wanted to maintain a foothold in the music world."

His return to song writing came unexpectedly after helping a Totnes busker produce an EP. One of his songs, She Felt Cool, was heard by independent film director Marc Banks in a Brighton pub and later featured in the award-winning cult film Pictures of Lily.

Jimmy subsequently turned to instrumental film music and submitted a horror soundtrack piece, Magus, to BBC Introducing. Broadcaster Tom Robinson put it to a public vote, which Jimmy won.

His distinctive guitar playing has also reached a global audience through the YouTube sailing channel Sailing La Vagabonde.

Now, after two years of writing, Jimmy has selected nine tracks from around 60 songs for his new album, which will be released digitally on September 9.

The record moves between upbeat roots-rock, swaggering guitar hooks and darker, more reflective material inspired by his own experiences.

The hometown show lands six days before the album’s official release on Thursday, September 3.
