A second memorial football match is being held in aid of Live Life Give Life, an organ donation charity, in memory of Dennis Corbin.
Dennis, known to his friends and Denzil, was killed in a freak accident in Cornwall in September 2016 at the age of 23. After his death, he donated his organs and saved four lives.
A man in his early 50s received a kidney, he had been waiting for three-and-a-half-years for a transplant, and a woman in her early 30s had a combined kidney and pancreas transplant, she is so much better since the operation as both her diabetes and kidney failure are a thing of the past.
A man in his early 60s received Dennis’ lungs. He had been very unwell prior to the operation but is now living a much more normal life. Finally, Dennis’ heart went to a woman in her early 30s. She had been in intensive care prior to the operation and was very ill. She is now home and able to look after her young family.
Last year, the memorial football match in Dennis’ memory was held in Salcombe and raised £5,000 for Live Life Give Life, including raffling off prizes from the likes of Gary Barlow and Jason Donovan. This year, on Saturday, May 12, Salcombe Town FC will be defending their title at Hamworthy United Football Club, Poole, where Dennis’ family are from.
Lucy Culkin, Dennis’ former boss at the Bar and Grill and the Winking Prawn and family friend, said: “The support the event has had locally is huge. The whole football team have given up their time and have even given up an official fixture to take part in the Dennis Corbin Charity Cup, and Phil Greaves, the coach, has been nothing but incredible.
“The team have such loyalty to Dennis, they understand that it was such a freak accident, it could have been any of them, and the community response has been unreal.”
Phil Greaves, Salcombe Town FC’s coach, said: “Denzil is hugely missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing him, the cheeky chap will no doubt be looking down on us with a smile. God bless Denzil from all those involved at Salcombe Town FC and their families.”
A coach is booked to leave Salcombe at 9.30am and return by 10pm on the Saturday, with a couple of spaces still available.
If anyone has anything they would like to donate to the raffle, contact Lucy via the Winking Prawn on 01548 842326.
