SALCOMBE Town Council have agreed to grant Holy Trinity Church £500 towards the cost of refurbishing the town clock.

It was noted that the clock was Salcombe’s only public clock, and therefore the council thought it appropriate to contribute towards its refurbishment.

The total cost of the restoration is £5,000 excluding VAT, and money has come from donations from the congregation at Holy Trinity church, along with the church’s own funds and the grant from the town council.

The benefice administrator explained that: ‘The dials and mechanisms will be accessed and removed using ropes, so no scaffolding will be required.

‘The dials will then be taken to a workshop, where tracings will be taken of the design, before they are rubbed down and prepared.

‘The dials, minute digits, outer ring and hands will be gilded with extra thick English gold leaf.

‘The dial motion works will then be dismantled and cleaned, before being returned to the clock tower and reinstalled and aligned to the clock’s movement.’

At this stage, the church doesn’t have a date as to when work will be complete.
