Pupils from two South Hams schools got the chance to try rugby and learn about life in the sport during a visit from players at Plymouth Albion RFC.
The players spoke to pupils from Charleton C of E and West Alvington C of E Academy about their careers in sport and what it takes to become a rugby player, sharing their experiences from the pitch and answering questions about the game.
The children then took part in practical activities, learning new rugby skills and putting their teamwork and communication to the test.
The visit also gave pupils a chance to try something new, learn from the semi-professional players and see first-hand the commitment, teamwork and resilience that sport can develop.
Hannah Ruston, Headteacher at Charleton Church of England Academy, said: “The children had a brilliant time with Plymouth Albion and really threw themselves into the activities.
“It was great to see them working together, encouraging one another and enjoying the chance to learn new skills.
“Rugby has some great values at its heart, including teamwork, respect and sportsmanship, and it was lovely to see the pupils putting these into practice. A huge thank you to their fantastic players for inspiring our pupils.”
Chris Preen, from Plymouth Albion, said the pupils had shown enthusiasm and energy throughout the session: “Last Friday was fantastic to spend time with the pupils and see their enthusiasm and energy throughout the session.
“Opportunities like this are a great way to introduce young people to rugby, encourage teamwork and build confidence, while hopefully inspiring the next generation to get involved in the sport.
“A big thank you to the school for having us - we hope the pupils enjoyed the experience as much as we did! Looking forward to welcoming you to Brickfields soon," he said.
