Jane Bullen, of Modbury, writes:
Unfortunately, no one in Modbury is any the wiser after South Hams Council’s ’clarification’ and residents and businesses have therefore obtained an extension to the consultation period.
District and local councillors do appear to be sympathetic to our concerns but are as much in the dark themselves as to how the permits and proposals will effect anyone willing to buy a permit to park in Modbury.
The consultation extension will allow our parish councillors to clarify the position with local councillors and explain to us all at the next meeting on Monday, February 13.
This has all been a bit of a nightmare, because no one in our area was even aware of the three-week consultation period, let alone the proposals, and we feel strongly that we need to have the opportunity to discuss and consider this openly as a community before it is too late.
Like many small, local towns with narrow streets, Modbury already suffers from parking difficulties, and to restrict the number of spaces available to permit holders will drive more car owners onto the already congested residential streets. It would make more sense to judge each town’s parking requirements on their own merits.
The district council’s constitution states that it ‘supports the active involvement of citizens in the process of local authority decision-making’ – so we trust
it will.
