Gill Cockings, of Bishops Mead, South Brent, writes:
I have just read the news that schools in the south west are having their government funding reduced. It seems that the system of financial support to schools is no better now than it has been for years.
Thirty-odd years ago my children were pupils at South Brent Primary School. At this time there was one computer for the whole school, which the children had to take turns to use. This, we thought, was probably quite good, given that it was the beginning of the computer age.
Circumstances changed and we moved to Buckinghamshire. Much to our surprise and delight for the children, their new school, which was similar to South Brent, had seven computers for each class.
The teachers in the new class were amazed when we told them that this lovely school in South Brent had only one computer: the reason, we were told, was that all the money goes to the south east, and that’s how it was. Nothing has changed there, then.
Of course, I realise that our school is much better equipped these days, but how I wish that these so-called experts who languish in their cosy offices in the south east would finally get it in their heads that there is life beyond Bristol – the Westcountry doesn’t begin and end there.
Children here deserve to have exactly the same amount of funding directed to their education as their counterparts in the south east. Forget HS2, give us a better deal down here.
