A man who cycled the four corners of mainland Britain has now completed his journey and has raised in excess of £1,500 for his cause.
Starting on September 20 at Dunnet Head, Scotland, and finishing at Lizard Point, Cornwall 15 days later, Kalvin Lott cycled more than 1,000 miles on his trip.
He chose to raise money for the breast cancer unit at Torbay Hospital because it has given his wife, Janet, the all clear after 12 long years of battling breast cancer. The unit is planning on building a new reception further away from the chemotherapy treatment area, which the hospital is hoping will make a more comfortable experience for people registering for their first time.
The 52-year old cycled solo and completely unaided from Dunnet Head, Scotland, the northernmost tip of Britain’s mainland; to Ardnumurchan Lighthouse, Scotland, the most westerly point; to Lowestoft, Britain’s most easterly point; to the most southern tip, Lizard Point, Cornwall.
At the beginning of his journey in Scotland, Kalvin encountered gale force winds and rain, but he remained determined to keep going. One of the days the wind was so strong, he said he “thought his tent was going to blow away,” and bad luck hit again when he managed to get two punctures resulting in having to get a new tyre.
However, Kalvin said Scotland was his favourite bit, “because the scenery was always breathtaking around every corner”.
By the time he reached Britain’s most easterly point, the weather had cleared, making for early starts, late finishes and long days.
Kalvin reached Lizard Point, the southern-most tip of mainland Britain on Friday, October 5. After his trip, Kalvin said: “I had always fancied having an adventure and this totally lived up to it and more. When people I met on route heard what I was doing, they were so supportive.
“I could not have done it, or raised so much money, without the support of family, friends, and the wonderful people of Kingsbridge.”
He took to his charity cycle Facebook page to give out one last message.
“Forget your mobile phones, computers and cars. The most amazing thing you can use in your life is your own body. If you look after it, it is amazing what it can do.
“Thank you again to everyone who sponsored me - it will make a difference to many women.”
Although his donation boxes have been collected, there’s still a chance to donate to ‘Kalv’s Silly Bike Ride’ at mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/kalvinlott1.
