Towns, villages and popular destinations in South Hams will be taking on a spooky vibe this October. Usually cosy pubs across the area will take on a darker look – and even some of the cafes will be feeling more spookier than usual.
Across the region, there’s so much for adults, kids and families to do. There’s at least two zombie outbreaks (18+), but also kid-friendly pumpkin festivals, Halloween parties, craft events and fancy dress competitions.
In Ivybridge, Freddie's Coffee Shop is putting on a ‘Ghouls Night Out - Paint Your Own Ghost’ event and guests are permitted to “bring their own drinks to enjoy” while creating a figure.
To attend, you can book online and it takes place on Friday, October 30 from 6.30- 8.30pm.
The online description of the event reads: “Participants paint a ghost figure and customize it with accessories such as witch hats, bows, flowers, cocktails, and pumpkins. All painting supplies are provided for the session, and no prior art experience is necessary.”

Over in Sparkwell, the world is “not how it used to be” on October 23, 24, 30 and 31, this Halloween season. Could you survive a zombie apocalypse, well, Dartmoor Zoo’s unforgettable ‘Night of the Dead - Zombie Survival Challenge’ is a chance to find out (adults only). At the zoo’s event, you’ll be risking “treacherous terrain, accompanied by zombies at each and every turn” within the grounds of Dartmoor Zoo. You’ll be given some cryptic clues during your journey, but “whether you make it back out alive is down to you and your companions”.
But near Kingsbridge is also under zombie attack as another “outbreak has reached East Prawle” at The Pigs Nose Inn.
The pub describes the 18+ event online: “Welcome to OUTBREAK 6 — The Pig’s Nose Inn’s annual Halloween party, transformed for one night into an immersive zombie apocalypse where live theatre, prosthetic horror, special effects and underground rave culture collide.
“From the moment you arrive, you’ll enter an unfolding live outbreak scenario populated by infected civilians, scientists, containment personnel and survivors. Expect live performers, roaming infected, interactive encounters.”
This event runs from 8pm - 2am with a lots of DJs, immersive theatre and a fancy dress competition at midnight.

Pennywell Farm’s popular Pumpkin Festival is a family friendly event suitable for all in the Buckfastleigh area.
As well as a pumpkin festival, October at Pennywell farm also offers ‘Pumpkin Nights’ – “cosy, festive evenings filled with live music, food, drink, instagrammable moments, and pumpkin picking under the stars”.
There’s also a Kids Halloween Party at Ivybridge Rugby Club, Ivybridge Rugby Club on Thursday, October 29, from 6pm - 9pm. It’s £3 per child, adults free.
A post online describes it: “Join us if you dare… for a spooktacular night of dancing, games, and ghoulish fun! Disco, games and spooky surprises all night
“Fancy dress encouraged! Prize for the best dressed – and bring your best carved pumpkin for a chance to win a prize. Don’t miss out on the frightfully good time!”
The Curious Stagecraft Company would also “love you to join them” for their fun HallowPlay event in Ivybridge on Monday, October 26, from 11am till 2 pm.
It’s £5 per child or £10 for a family ticket, but parents or carers go free.
On Wednesday, October 28, from 10am–12pm, there’ll be a “fun-filled Halloween-themed art workshop where little artists can get creative” at Endsleigh Garden Centre, (part of The Blue Diamond Group with Colourful Horizons).
Spaces are limited, so book quickly to avoid missing out!
