Kingsbridge Choral Workshop raised £501 for Luck of Birth - a charity supporting refugees - at a concert on Saturday February 25.

The concert, held at Kingsbridge Community College, was the culmination of a day-long annual choral workshop led by local musician Alastair Durden.

The choir was joined by a 24-strong full baroque orchestra in the afternoon for a performance of J.S. Bach’s Magnificat in D - with the concert open to the public for the first time.

Thalia Vitali of the Kingsbridge Choral Workshop said: ‘The charity was set up by Totnes couple Sam and Theo Nelson, who, having witnessed the dismal plight of refugees stranded in camps in Thessaloniki, refused to turn away.

‘Instead, they went to Greece as a family, they put their hearts and souls into the challenge of restoring dignity and supplying a measure of wellbeing to those who are so shockingly deprived of their most basic needs. Their achievements to-date are impressive.’

Thalia added: ‘Alastair Durden and myself would like to take this opportunity to extend our huge appreciation and thanks to all who gave so generously, offering a helping hand to those whose need is very great.’
