South Devon MP Caroline Voaden has been unanimously reselected as the Liberal Democrat candidate ahead of the next general election.

Despite there being no impending election, Ms Voaden said the current state of politics is “unpredictable” and that the party wants to be prepared.

In the previous election, held on July 4, 2024, Ms Voaden beat the sitting Conservative MP Anthony Mangnall, ousting 100 years of Tory leadership.

Ms Voaden said: “I am delighted to have been unanimously reselected by the South Devon Liberal Democrats to be their candidate at the next election.

“It’s been a huge honour serving as MP for the place I love these past couple of years, serving constituents in Westminster and South Devon.

“While the next election may feel like a long time away, politics is unpredictable, so it’s good to be ready. My politics remain firmly rooted in South Devon, not dictated to by donors or lobbyists. I hope I have proved that so far. I can assure the people of South Devon that that will not change.”

Since her election, Ms Voaden says she and her team have responded to 27,000 issues and questions raised by the public, including concerns around rural banking and campaigning to repair the Slapton Line.

Ms Voaden added that she has spoken 421 times in the House, more than her predecessor, who reportedly clocked up 356 speeches between 2019 and 2024.

The announcement drew widespread support online, with many commending Ms Voaden’s hard work and “hands-on” approach.

Jennie Whiting commented: “Caroline, I hugely admire your work, your endeavour, your vocalism, your dedication to all the things that we know make sense.”

Another supporter, Sue Franklin, said: “Well done, Caroline. I'm the first to admit I was very sceptical when you were elected, but you have proven to be a hard-working MP for all your constituents.”

Fellow Liberal Democrat councillor, Cllr Holly Greenberry-Pullen, a member of West Devon Borough Council, called the selection “100% the right choice”.
