THIRTEEN golfers got together last year to get out of their comfort zones and produce a Calendar Girls inspired 2015 calendar and raised money in the process.
The calendar, ‘The Beauty of Bigbury Golf Course’, was the idea of Junior Treasurer and Mum to two junior golfers, Sandra Westlake. She garnered the support of a few Bigbury Lady members who were keen to support the project to raise funds for Cancer Research UK, Kingsbridge Triangle Centre and the club’s own Junior Development Fund.
Sandra then enlisted the help of local, well-known photographer, Lorna Yabsley who had shot a similar calendar a decade earlier for the Salcombe Ladies Rowing Club.
Nigel Blenkarne, director of golf at Bigbury Golf Club, said: ‘Lorna was quite brilliant in the way she created such varied shots of the lady golfers in poses never normally seen on the course!
‘They were beautifully done, the end result was stunning and everyone involved was very pleased.’
A thousand calendars were produced and then the hard part began, marketing and selling them. Through press articles and personal contacts within the golfing world enough calendars were sold to cover costs and make a healthy profit which was split between the two charities and to encourage more young people to take up the great game of golf.
Sandra teaches at Kingsbridge Community College and has already arranged for the first group of seven students to attend a course to learn golf at Bigbury, starting this Wednesday.
A small number of Calendars are still available if anyone would like a collectors’ item, they can be obtained from Nigel Blenkarne for a small donation of £2.
