BIGBURY Golf Club Captains Caroline Hallett and Mike Gates have raised more than £1,000 for the charity Widows and Orphans in Rural Kenya.
The captains raised the funds at the golf club in 2015 and passed a cheque for £1,005 to WORK, which was founded by nurse Mary-Jane Butler, who has lived and worked in the Bigbury area for more than 20 years.
Voted one of four Catholic Women of the Year 2015, Mary-Jane ensures every penny raised goes to the charity, which is dedicated to the education and training, and that pays all the healthcare costs of vulnerable children and adults in Western Kenya.
During 2016, this small charity will be supporting 120 orphans, 90 widows with over 400 grandchildren, two health clinics, six secondary schools and two primary schools assisting children who are either deaf or have special educational needs.
